No tropical storm or typhoon expected, says Met Dept

Active weather is forecast throughout this week in the Sultanate with showers or thunder showers expected occasionally across the country, including the sea areas, the Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department stated in a release yesterday.

The department said the country is currently in the inter-monsoon period, where local wind effects play an important role in governing the daily weather.

As of 11am local time yesterday, no tropical storm or typhoon was observed and expected to enter the South China Sea, as well as approach Brunei, the release added.

The active weather condition is due to the moist atmosphere across the region, which enhances the development of rain clouds and thus increases the rainfall activity.

Wind speed may reach up to 50 kilometres per hour during or near heavy showers.

Meanwhile, over Brunei waters, sea state is at slight to moderate state, between 0.6 to 1.5 metres. The department advised the public to take precautionary action with respect to the forecast active weather condition.

It added, “There is a risk of flash floods, especially at low-lying and flood prone areas as well as near river banks during continuous heavy rain and also during high tide.

“Risk of landslide and falling trees are also possible during heavy showers and gusty condition.

“Public, road users and fishermen are advised to always be up to date with the latest weather forecast, advisory and warning issued by the Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department, and to take necessary actions to ensure safety.”

The department advised the public not to believe information circulated through social media without first confirming its validity.

The department will continue to monitor the weather conditions and will issue weather advisories or warnings if necessary.
