‘No Plastic Every Day’ campaign has lowered plastic bags use by 12 per cent

    |     Rokiah Mahmud     |

SINCE the ‘No Plastic Every Day’ initiative was carried out in April 2018, the use of plastic bags has been reduced by 12 per cent, Minister of Development Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar said.

He was responding to a question from Legislative Council (LegCo) member Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Imam Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Hamid bin Bakal on whether the Ministry of Development had any plans to introduce alternatives to plastic bags.

The minister said the initiative has shown some positive impact towards the efforts in reducing the use of plastic bags in Brunei Darussalam.

He added, “It is up to the consumers and business owners to find substitutes or other alternatives, as the main objective of this campaign is to reduce the use of plastic bags.

“Apart from that, the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe) does not prevent business premises from implementing a much more environmental-friendly alternative, such as the use of paper bags. The department is also striving to explore other alternatives, such as the use of biodegradable plastic bags.”
