NINE athletes of the Special Olympics Brunei Darussalam (SOBD) left Brunei Darussalam on Thursday night to compete in the Special Olympics World Games 2019 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE) from March 14-21.
Acting Director of Youth and Sports Hajah Zainab binti Haji Morshidi handed the national flag to the Head of Coaches Haji Suhaili bin Yusof at the sending-off event.
The athletes are Nur Syahmimi Asqina binti Safieh (4x100m relay run and shot put); Dayangku Nur Amal Rashidah binti Pengiran Abdul Rahman (100m, 200m and 4x100m relay run); Awangku Muhammad Nur Rahmanruddin bin Pengiran Abdul Rahman (100m, 200m and 4x100m Relay run); Nur Hafizah Irdina binti Saini (100m, 200m and 4x100m Relay run); Amal Farwizah binti Haji Ibrahim (100m, 4x100m relay run and shot put); Muhammad Haziman Azrul bin Muhammad Nuruddin (100m, 200m run and shot put); Hizam Budiman Anak Kasin (200m, 4x100m relay run and shot put); Muhammad Faiz bin Sapar (bowling); and Syamsiah binti Takong (bowling).
The SOBD athletes will take part in the Special Olympics Dancesport Demonstration, along with 130 athletes from different Special Olympic programmes, a press statement said.
They will perform a traditional Bruneian dance at the event, trained by dance instructors Dayangku Maszidah binti Pengiran Mohamed, Hajah Noor Sah binti Haji Amit and music arranger Md Abu Soffian bin Md Alinoordin.
Over 7,000 athletes from over 170 nations will participate in the Special Olympic World Games 2019.
