NINE individuals and five companies were issued compound fines by the Law Enforcement Division of the Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB) Municipal Department for disposing rubbish in public areas, during the Bersih operation in Serusop yesterday.
Each individual offender was issued a BND100 compound fine. They are Blass Fontanilla, Azizul Mridha, Sumon Sarkar, Mohammad Shamim Ahmed, Shamim Ahmed, Mohammad Bahalul, Md Masdom Billah Shopon, Md Numan Ahmad and Sheik Dawoothu Oli Masthangan.
Meanwhile, the companies comprising Syarikat Haider Sdn Bhd, Syarikat LSB Sdn Bhd, Restoran Amin Said Dan Anak-Anak Sdn Bhd, Fayze Jaya Café and Syarikat N I Sdn Bhd were issued BND200 compound fines.
Under Chapter 30, Section 12 (1) of the Minor Offences Act, it is an offence to store or dispose of items in public places – a violation which carries the penalty of a compound fine that must be settled within seven days.
If the company or individual fails to settle the fine, the matter will be referred to court. For first-time offenders, the penalty is a fine of BND1,000 or a month imprisonment. For repeat offenders, the punishment is a BND3,000 fine or imprisonment of not more than three months.
Members of the public are reminded to dispose unwanted items at allocated areas, while companies are reminded to maintain standards of hygiene and comply with the regulations under the Minor Offences Act.
The Law Enforcement Division will continue to conduct inspections in areas under the jurisdiction of the BSB Municipal Department.
