TUTONG Chung Hwa School Tutong will be adding 12 new classrooms, which are set for completion within a year, to the cost of BND1.5 million.
Pehin Kapitan Lela Diraja Dato Paduka Goh King Chin was the guest of honour at the foundation stone-laying ceremony yesterday, for the construction project.
Also present at the ceremony were Legislative Council member Yang Berhormat Ong Tiong Oh, prominent businessman Lau Shiew Yuen, President of the Taiwan Business Association in Brunei Darussalam Richard Chuang Hsi Shan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Chung Hwa School Tutong Soon Seng Lee, representative of Hock Tong Keong temple Onn Siew Teck and Jonas Chong, whose grandfather donated the land where the school is built on.
Pehin Kapitan Lela Diraja Dato Paduka Goh has a sentimental attachment for Chung Hwa School Tutong, having studied there as a boy when his father, the late Goh Hock Kee, was Chairman of the Chung Hwa School Tutong in 1956.
Contributing back to his old school, Pehin Kapitan Lela Diraja Dato Paduka Goh has given BND150,000 for the new classrooms. Six years ago, he contributed BND100,000 for the school’s expansion. Following the laying of the foundation stone, Soon Seng Lee and Director of Indramas Sdn Bhd Pinawaty binti Hassan inked an agreement for the construction of the new classrooms.
Soon thanked their sponsors, saying, “For the last 28 years, our school has not increased its fees. This is due to public support and sponsorship, so that we continue to sustain the school without having to charge fees that may burden the students’ families.”
He also hopes to further upgrade the school’s facilities, which include an indoor basketball court and a parking lot, in the future.
Describing the current capacity at Chung Hwa School Tutong as ‘inadequate’, Soon said, “The current student population is almost 400, and we are unable to receive new ones. With the new classrooms, we hope to take in more students to the school.”
