New British High Commissioner to Brunei appointed

The British High Commission in Brunei announced the appointment of John Virgoe as the High Commissioner (Designate) to Brunei Darussalam.

Virgoe will take up the post in August 2020 and will replace Richard Lindsay, who has been the British High Commissioner to Brunei since 2017.

According to the British High Commission, Virgoe most recently served as the Head of Department for Southeast Asia at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London. Prior to that, he was the Head of the Joint Anti-Corruption Unit for the Cabinet Office.

Virgoe has had a long and distinguished career in diplomacy, joining the Foreign Commonwealth Office in 1995. He has vast experience in Southeast Asia, Crisis Management, Economic and Climate Change, and was the Deputy Permanent Representative to United Nations Environment (UN) Programme and UN-Habitat.

This will be his fourth posting overseas, having been posted previously to Jakarta, Nairobi and Canberra.
