The Brunei Darussalam Under-16 National Football Team is set to compete in the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Under-16 Boys’ Championship, taking place in Surakarta, Indonesia, from June 21 to July 3, 2024. This tournament offers a vital platform for Brunei’s young talent to showcase their skills on a regional stage, setting the groundwork for future international competitions.
The team received a morale boost at the Brunei International Airport on Wednesday morning from FABD President Feisal Eusoff, accompanied by FABD Deputy President Haji Mahrub bin Haji Murni and members of the FABD Executive Committee.
Brunei’s participation in the annual AFF tournament highlights the country’s commitment to nurturing young football talent. The 19th AFF U-16 Championship features three groups: Group A (Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines, Singapore), Group B (Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, Brunei Darussalam), and Group C (Thailand, Malaysia, Timor-Leste, invited team Australia).
Under-16 National Team Manager Mohd Ali Rahman Haji Sulaiman shared his optimism about the team’s progress, noting positive signs from recent training sessions and friendly matches. However, he acknowledged the formidable challenge posed by other teams, which often have more extensive and organised preparations.
Brunei Darussalam has been drawn into Group B, where they will face tough competition from Vietnam, Myanmar, and Cambodia. For many players, this international tournament marks their first experience at such a high level.
“Our expectations are modest; securing at least 3 points would be satisfactory given the limited preparation time,” said Mohd Ali Rahman.
