National tennis team lose to Iraq in opening Davis Cup match in Colombo

The Brunei Darussalam national tennis team endured a 3-0 defeat to Iraq in their opening Pool ‘B’ match of the 2022 Davis Cup Asia/ Oceania Group IV at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association Courts in Colombo, Sri Lanka on Monday.

Brunei captain Billy Wong Kee Loong fell to a 6-4 6-2 defeat to Iraq’s Abdullah Ali Hatem Ghrairi in the first match while Aiman Abdullah lost 6-1 6-4 to Adil Mustafa Al-Saedi in the subsequent match.

The country ended their match-up against Iraq with defeat in the doubles’ match as the pairing of Lim Chun Peng and Gavin Lim lost 6-0 6-0 to the duo of Mohammed Al-Shammari and Abdullah Ali Hatem Ghrairi.

The national team will play Yemen today before concluding their group stage campaign against Maldives tomorrow.

The Sultanate is making their first appearance in the international event since 2008 when they finished fifth in Pool ‘A’ of the Asia/Oceania Group IV.

The Sri Lanka meet also marked the country’s participation overseas for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Seven countries – Brunei Darussalam, Iraq, Yemen, Maldives, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Kyrgzystan – are competing in Pool ‘B’.
