The Maritime and Port Authority of Brunei Darussalam (MPABD) and the Department of Transport of Canada officially signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the mutual recognition of certificate issued under the provisions of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), 1978, as amended.
Chief Executive of MPABD Captain (Rtd) Zil Husam bin Haji Abdul Rahman represented the Sultanate during the signing ceremony, while Canada was represented by Alternate Permanent Representative of Canada to the International Maritime Organization (IMO)Michelle Sanders.
The landmark agreement was inked at the IMO headquarters during the 82nd Session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) meeting in London, United Kingdom.
The MoU is a significant step in strengthening maritime cooperation between Brunei and Canada, ensuring that qualifications and competencies of seafarers from both countries are equally recognised.
The agreement will enable the employment of Bruneian and Canadian seafarers aboard vessels registered under either country’s flag, promoting growth and development through enhanced international exposure and collaboration.
Brunei Darussalam’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom First Admiral (Rtd) Pengiran Dato Seri Pahlawan Norazmi bin Pengiran Haji Muhammad and High Commissioner of Canada to the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland and Permanent Representative to the IMO Ralph Goodale, were also in attendance to witness the signing. – James Kon
