Laws and regulations outside of the current methods of Zakat collection are already in place.
They are pending consultation from various parties to identify the best way forward.
This was said by Minister of Religious Affairs Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman in response to the query posed by Legislative Council (LegCo) members Yang Berhormat Haji Mohimin bin Haji Johari @ Jahari and Yang Berhormat Pengiran Haji Ali bin Pengiran Maon on ways to improving Zakat collection procedure during the 17th Legislative Council (LegCo) session yesterday.
The minister noted that the previous Property Zakat and Zakat Fitrah totalled between BND17 million to BND18 million, while the distribution allocated annually amounted to more than BND20 million, thus the collection is still sufficient due to the balance in the Zakat account from 2007 to 2012 which covers the needs of the distribution.
The BND20 million allocated budget is for the distribution for a period of two years, he added.
The minister said the Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB) has online Zakat Fitrah collection in the pipeline during this year’s holy month of Ramadhan.
A special bank account will be drawn for the Zakat collection, and not to MUIB he said.
“The mechanism is being examined and ascertained by the MoRA that it should be safe and orderly in accordance with financial regulations,” said the minister. “Such facilities will be seen as a start to collecting Zakat effectively and in accordance with our circumstances and goal to improve the total collection over time.”
