The Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) has offered short-term contracts to local companies to maintain a number of Muslim cemeteries, said Minister of Religious Affairs Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman during the 17th Legislative Council session yesterday.
“The contract has been offered to local companies for cleaning and garbage disposal including maintaining old cemeteries that can be reused for burial as land at some cemeteries are said to be fully utilised,” the minister said in response to a query by Legislative Council member Yang Berhormat Haji Umarali bin Esung, adding that the contracts are on daily and weekly terms.
Yang Berhormat Haji Umarali asked regarding guidelines that needed to be followed to ensure the management of the cemeteries is properly executed. The minister said only 41 cemetery labourers are available to maintain the 241 Muslim cemeteries. Of the 241 cemeteries, 167 are fully utilised while the other 104 are not.
“The ministry has offered short-term contracts to local companies to properly manage the cemeteries. This opens up employment opportunities for local jobseekers besides providing business to local companies,” he said.
He also shared that seven Muslim cemeteries in Tutong District and two in Brunei-Muara District are managed under short-term contracts.
