MoH mulls need for booster shot

It is expected for any type of vaccine or antibody to essentially decline in efficacy over a prolonged period of time, regardless of whether it utilises mRNA, activated protein or an inactivated virus.

This was said by Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar, in reference to reports that Moderna’s vaccine efficacy against COVID-19 wanes over time.

“This is not surprising, and at the moment, there are thoughts on whether to administer a booster shot,” he said.

“Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, we had flu vaccines which were administered annually, since the effectiveness only lasts for up to eight to nine months, after which it will decline or lose potency. In all probability, this is true of the COVID-19 vaccine, and many countries are already considering booster shots.”
