The Ministry of Education (MoE) edged the Ministry of Health (MoH) 31-29 in a keenly-contested final to emerge winners of the 26th Civil Service Day Inter-Ministry Netball Tournament at the Multi-purpose Hall of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex yesterday.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister’s Office snatched third place after they defeated the Ministry of Finance and Economy (MoFE) 27-17 in a playoff.
Team coordinator and manager of the MoE Hajah Rosediana binti Haji Hidop hailed her charges’ teamwork after guiding them to the coveted title.
“We work together in the Ministry of Education and we fight as a ministry and as a team. Alhamdulillah, we have a good bond with the team and officials,” said the team manager.
In preparation for the tournament, the Ministry of Education trained since December last year until January, but the players already boasted netball experience having established ties with their respective local clubs.
“They have their own team, but since we have our own ministry, we play together,” she said.
Asked on future plans for the team, she said, “We have another group, not just this team and other players from the Ministry of Education which I as a coordinator, will set the training once or twice a week.”
She added, “We have to find the time and train again to participate in another local tournament.”
A total of 11 teams comprising ministries including the MoE, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Development, Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Religious Affairs, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS), Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications, MoH, MoFE and Ministry of Foreign Affairs participated.
Organised by the MCYS through the Department of Youth and Sports with the cooperation of the Brunei Netball Association (BNA), the tournament initially began with the group stage on January 17.
The top two teams from each group qualified for the knock-out stage, which concluded with the final match.
Deputy Minister of Education Datin Seri Paduka Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh presented the prizes.
