The Ministry of Education (MoE) has distributed 7,000 face masks to teachers, school leaders and school staff, with 3,000 more still in the process of being purchased. It is hoped the ration will last for six months. Further face mask purchase will depend on the current situation in the country.

Minister of Education Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman revealed this during the press conference at the Ministry of Health (MoH) yesterday.

“It is understandable that parents/guardians are still cautious about sending their children to school. This is where the role of the MoE and the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) comes in, assuring parents and guardians that their children are always cared for as they attend classes,” he said.

The minister hoped parents will take this into account, adding that students’ attendance will be affected if they fail to attend classes, as will their studies and mental health.

The minister also said that preparations for more students returning from overseas are being carried out in an orderly manner, as it has been since April. A standard operating procedure (SOP) on how to receive students returning from overseas has already been created.

“There are students who will return in June, and the MoE is already working with the Ministry of Health (MoH) on this. The procedure is the same. The returning students will carry out a two-week self-isolation period and will have their health monitored at prepared locations, by the committee looking into this matter,” he said.
