MKM lends helping hand to 50 needy children

AS PART of its annual project that started a decade ago, the Brunei Council on Social Welfare (MKM) provided assistance in the form of school necessities to some 50 needy children of clients registered with the charity organisation yesterday.

As part of the back to school initiative, the children were brought to various shops by MKM members for the purchase of school necessities such as school bags, school uniforms, books, stationery and sport outfits.

Hajah Zaiton binti Salim, one of the MKM members supervising the purchases, said, “Each child buys what he or she needs within the budget allocated to them.

“We do not simply distribute what we think they need, as they may not need these as much as other things. The purchases they made are customised for their needs.”

MKM has 160 students who come from underprivileged families registered with the charity organisation.

Zubaidah binti Dato Abu Zar, another MKM member said, “We received BND12,500 worth of donations for the first phase of our back-to-school project. We spent around BND250 per child, but the amount each child gets may differ slightly depending on their needs.

“Depending on further donations received, we hope to be able to assist the remaining needy children registered with us.”

Aside from the annual project, MKM has organised numerous welfare programmes for the needy in Brunei. Among these are a daily school feeding programme where currently 300 needy schoolchildren from the Brunei-Muara and Temburong districts get either breakfast or lunch for every school day; a weekly legal aid and advisory clinic; and a monthly staple food project where basic food necessities are given to needy families.

MKM is a registered association that provides assistance to the needy in Brunei. Needy families need to be registered with the organisation where their financial status will be verified before being eligible for assistance.
