Ministry, school set to host Model UN-style conference

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) and International School Brunei (ISB) are set to jointly host the annual ISB Borneo Global Issues Conference (ISB BGIC) from March 10-13.

Close to 300 secondary students across Borneo will discuss and debate topics based on the United Nations’ (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This year’s keynote speakers are Head of Manpower Planning and Employment Council (MPEC) Secretariat at the Prime Minister’s Office Dr Hajah Siti Haziah binti Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin and Deputy Managing Director and Commercial Director of Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd (BSP) Haji Mohamad Azmi bin Haji Mohd Hanifah.

Twenty-three government and private schools across Borneo will be participating in the conference.

The theme for this year is the UN SDG Goal 8, ‘Decent Work and Economic Growth’. The participants have been diligently attending training sessions led by student leaders in recent months.

The ISB BGIC is an annual student-led Model UN-style conference where participants represent countries to address various views on current real-world issues.

The initiative is aimed at the development of students’ understanding of global citizenship and critical skills in research, public speaking and negotiation.

The conference is sponsored by BSP, Brunei LNG Sdn Bhd, Dynamik Technologies Sdn Bhd, Datastream Digital Sdn Bhd, Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam, Brunei Fertilizer Industries Sdn Bhd, and Butra HeidelbergCement Sdn Bhd, with support from TLT Enterprise, Interhouse Company, Air Cat Logistics Sdn Bhd, D’Sunlit Sdn Bhd, Brunei Press Sdn Bhd, and Aewon Garment and Embroidery.
