MINISTER of Foreign Affairs II Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd Yusof said his ministry through its representatives overseas play a role promoting Brunei Darussalam’s local products and tourism.
These promotions are continuous and renewed from time to time, he said, adding that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) is also cooperating with other countries to facilitate visitors to Brunei.
Through cooperation with other ministries such as the Ministry of Home Affairs, several nations can get a visa easily.
For example, visitors from China can get their visa upon arrival resulting in the increasing influx of Chinese visitors to the Sultanate.
The minister was responding to Legislative Council member and Village Head of Kampong Limau Manis Yang Berhormat Haji Mohimin bin Haji Johari @ Jahari on efforts to promote tourism and the economy.
On the condition of the historic Bumbungan 12 Building along Jalan Residency, the minister said it will still likely to be a tourist attraction and renovation works are underway.
When asked about the expansion of ‘Brunei Hall’ or ‘Brunei House’ to other countries to unite Bruneians, to conduct in-house training and to offer jobs to non-bonded Bruneians, the minister said his ministry’s jurisdiction covers only the welfare of its mission representatives overseas.
The Ministry of Education’s jurisdiction covers the welfare of students overseas as well as the Brunei Hall.
The question was raised by Legislative Council member and Village Head of Kampong Masjid Lama, Pekan Muara, Sabun and Pelumpong Yang Berhormat Pengiran Haji Mohamed bin Pengiran Haji Osman @ Othman.
Meanwhile, the minister said promotional programmes and information dissemination on e-registration are needed.
He was responding to a query by Legislative Council member and Village Head of Kampong Labi I Yang Berhormat Hanapi bin Mohd Siput on the lack of awareness among Bruneians to report to the Brunei mission overseas and the need to carry out roadshows.
Responding to Legislative Council member Yang Berhormat Siti Rozaimeriyanty binti Dato Seri Laila Jasa Haji Abdul Rahman regarding scholarships offered by foreign countries to local students and whether any committee is mandated to oversee such scholarship award, the minister said although a scholarship is offered through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, his ministry works closely with the Ministry of Education and Universiti Brunei Darussalam in search for an academically qualified candidate.
On another issue, the minister said a Brunei mission overseas may employ people from the host country or Bruneians depending on their capability.
This was in response to Legislative Council member and Penghulu of Mukim Liang Yang Berhormat Haji Abdul Hamid bin Haji Mumin who asked about local youth intending to work overseas.
The minister also said that the MFA is monitoring cases of scams by companies involved in human trafficking.
