In keeping with its mission, the Ministry of Defence (MinDef) plays an important role in maintaining the safety and stability of the country, which forms the basic and main criteria in the further development of the country’s economy.

This was said by Minister of Defence II Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof during his adjourned speech at the 17th Legislative Council (LegCo) session yesterday.

He added, “Under the leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the MinDef will continue to develop and commit to its role, based upon its three main pillars of deterrence and response, defence diplomacy, and holistic defence.

“These three pillars contribute to the confidence and welfare of the citizens and residents to live in an atmosphere of peace and harmony. At the same time, these three pillars also foster understanding and transparency with neighbouring countries, while working together with government and non-government agencies, the public sector and members of the public,” he said.

The minister added, “Under His Majesty’s leadership and far-sighted thinking, the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) will be celebrating its 60th anniversary, with various milestones having been achieved in terms of manpower development, the capacity for cooperation in defence diplomacy, involvement in regional and international operations, and the establishment of facilitators for the endorsement of operations.

“With this, the MinDef’s trajectory towards a transformative era is hoped to reach a significant milestone with the launch of a new White Paper, which will provide an outline on the principles and strategic defence, as well as the latest capacity development plan for the RBAF. It will also continue to be a benchmark for the MinDef, as well as in the implementation of short-, mid- and long-term planning.”
