His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday received in audience State Councillor and Minister of National Defence of the People’s Republic of China General Wei Fenghe.
Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Brunei Darussalam Yu Hong, Deputy Commander of the Southern Theatre Command Lieutenant General (Air Force) Jia Zhigang, Deputy Chief of the Office for International Military Cooperation of Central Military Commission (OIMC) Major General Song Yanchao, Director General of Research Bureau of General Office of Central Military Commission Major General Liu Yantong and Staff of Asian Affairs Bureau, OIMC Colonel Jiang Bin accompanied General Wei Fenghe.
Minister of Defence II Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, Minister of Foreign Affairs II Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd Yusof and Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) Major General (U) Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sahat were also present.
Defence and military cooperation between Brunei Darussalam and the People’s Republic of China were strengthened through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Military Exchanges on September 12, 2003, and were further bolstered through the signing of MoU on Strengthening Defence Cooperation on September 13, 2017 during the State Visit of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam to the People’s Republic of China.
Both sides enjoy a warm and friendly defence relationship, in which Brunei Darussalam received a donation of medical supplies from the People’s Republic of China in the effort to combat the COVID-19 pandemic in May. The bilateral defence relationship is also underpinned by extensive defence and military interactions such as exchange of visits, port visits, trainings and courses; and in cooperation with one another at a multilateral level through the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus).
