The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has been allocated a budget of BND124,706,795 for the 2024-2025 financial year.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd Yusof said that BND57,564,750 will fund emolument and BND57,400,000 for recurring expenses.
The minister said that BND9,742,045 will be used to cover development expenses.
The minister said this in a deliberation during the 20th session of the Legislative Council (LegCo) meeting yesterday, adding that the budget will be used to enable the ministry to carry out tasks and responsibilities more effectively and efficiently while enhancing the capabilities of the personnel and upgrading its infrastructure.
The minister also welcomed the 12th National Development Plan (RKN 12) that is set to kick-off, with the ministry ready to carry out a number of development projects not only to upgrade the infrastructure but also maintain the government’s assets at Brunei’s foreign missions abroad.
He said upgrading works will enable the ministry to focus on the overall capacity of its officers and staff, with many stationed at the International Convention Centre (ICC).
The minister also said the Sultanate is celebrating 40 years of full independence this year, marking the same four decades of the MFA’s establishment, and the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations with friendly nations. It holds a special meaning as Brunei also commemorates its four decades of membership in regional and international organisations such as ASEAN, the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Commonwealth.
However, the minister shared, the country has encountered various challenges due to the increasingly volatile geopolitical environment and the uncertain global economic conditions.
Thus, the MFA needs to be more efficient and agile in addressing these challenges. As such, the Sultanate remains steadfast in adopting a positive approach by refraining from interference in the internal affairs of other countries.
In addition, Brunei consistently denounces the prolonged occupation and continued violation of the inalienable rights of the Palestinians by the occupying power.
Furthermore, the MFA will enhance and strengthen the role of Brunei missions abroad in advancing the interests of the government. – Rokiah Mahmud
