Minister, US Secretary of State express concern over Myanmar

The United States (US) Secretary of State Antony J Blinken extended appreciation for Brunei’s role as the current ASEAN Chair and Minister of Foreign Affairs II Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd Yusof’s efforts as the ASEAN Special Envoy to Myanmar during a call.

The minister and the secretary expressed concern over the violence and deteriorating crisis in Myanmar and emphasised the urgency for the Burmese military regime to cease violence, release all that have been unjustly detained, and restore multi-party democracy and Myanmar’s democratic transition, according to the US Department of State Spokesperson Ned Price.

They also reaffirmed the need to hold the Myanmar regime accountable to the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus and facilitate a meaningful visit by Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Erywan to Myanmar to include engagements with all stakeholders.

Finally, the secretary discussed the Australia-UK-US (AUKUS) trilateral security partnership and its role to sustain peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
