Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar urged the public not to discriminate, spread false information or news against recovered or newly infected COVID-19 patients in the Sultanate.

Several incidents of discrimination have been reported to the Ministry of Health.

Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham in his statement at the press conference yesterday said, “The Ministry of Health has been informed of several incidents of discrimination and false news involving COVID-19 patients in relation to their workplace.

The ministry would like to remind the public not to discriminate any patient or former patient and anyone associated with them, including where they work.

“These incidents should not have happened and instead the people should pray for their well-being and recovery from COVID-19.”

The minister also advised the public not to be misled and believe information and news disseminated over social media without ascertaining its authenticity.

He urged the public to be more responsible and not disseminate anything that has not been approved by the Ministry of Health.

The minister said sharing false information is an offence under the Public Order Act (Chapter 148), Section 34 and is punishable by up to three years imprisonment and a fine up to BND3,000.
