On behalf of South Korean President Moon Jae-in, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Brunei Darussalam Yoon Hyun-bong conferred the Order of Diplomatic Service Merit upon Minister of Foreign Affairs II Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd Yusof during a ceremony at the Republic of South Korean Embassy.
The Order of Diplomatic Service Merit is awarded to a person who has rendered outstanding meritorious services in enhancing Korean national prestige and promoting amity with its allies.
Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Erywan was awarded the first grade order, titled Gwanghwa, which means ‘the great virtue shines all over the country’.
It is also the name of the southern gate of Gyeongbokgung, the largest royal palace in Seoul.
The Republic of Korea (RoK) and Brunei Darussalam have been continuously strengthening bilateral ties since 1984 when they established diplomatic relations after Brunei Darussalam gained independence. Last year marked the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, when both leaders made State Visits. The contribution of Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Erywan was crucial in the development of these bilateral relations.
Both nations have broadened cooperation in the international arena. Brunei Darussalam, as ASEAN country coordinator for the Republic of Korea in 2018-2021, has played a significant role in bridging Korea and ASEAN, including but not limited to the success of the 2019 ROK-ASEAN Commemorative Summit commemorating the 30th anniversary of the establishment of Republic of Korea and ASEAN dialogue relations.
Brunei Darussalam is also an essential partner of the Republic of Korea in pursuing its New Southern Policy to ASEAN member countries.
The Korean government recognised the contribution of Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Erywan and other Bruneian Government officials in enhancing cooperation between the two countries in a broader context.
On the occasion, the Korean Embassy in Brunei Darussalam extended its gratitude to Bruneians for their continued support of the relationship between the two countries.
Witnessing the occasion were Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Erywan’s family members and senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
