MINISTER of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin and senior officials attended the first harvest of the Youth Paddy Project Site, at the Wasan Agricultural Development Area yesterday.
The four entrepreneurs overseeing the project are Haji Masnawi bin Haji Mohammad of Perusahaan Haji Masnawi, Muhammad Abdul Rasyid bin Kamarudjaman of Syarikat Al-Rasyid, Hairinshah bin Haji Tahirudin of Hyren Agrotex Global Success Enterprise and Muhamad Yunos bin Kepli of U-Nos K Enterprise, who graduated from the 2015 Youth Paddy Course.
The course was jointly organised by the Youth Development Centre under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) and the Department of Agriculture and Agrifood under the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism.
Having demonstrated their commitment and industriousness in developing a one-hectare plot as a paddy farm at Lot 2G Kampong Bebuloh, the four youth were awarded with an eight-hectare plot at the Wasan Agricultural Development Area.
The land clearing for the eight-hectare plot was carried out for free by Syarikat Swee Sdn Bhd on February 10, while the planting of the high-yield Sembada 188 rice variety took place on April 5.
The four entrepreneurs are being guided and supported by Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD), in terms of financial advisory assistance and business advances under the LiveWIRE Brunei Business Awards Start-Up Funding Scheme (BASfs).
Meanwhile, the Youth Development Centre and the Department of Agriculture and Agrifood are offering courses and programmes to youth interested in the farming of vegetables, fruit, paddy and poultry, in addition to hydroponic farming techniques.
