Minister attends ASEAN meeting in Myanmar

Minister of Home Affairs Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong yesterday attended the 7th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Disaster Management (AMMDM) and the 8th Conference of the Parties to the ASEAN Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response (COP to AADMER) at Shwe San Eain Hotel, Nay Pyi Taw, the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.

The meeting, attended by ASEAN ministers responsible for disaster management, among others, discussed ways to strengthen ASEAN’s collective response to any disaster and to evaluate the implementation of the AADMER to realise the desire to build a safe and disaster-resistant society.

The meeting was chaired by Myanmar’s Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr Win Myat Aye.

During the meeting, the Minister of Home Affairs emphasised the importance of initiatives to enhance regional cooperation in emergency response and also welcomed coordination of activities in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation.

The minister also shared on Brunei Darussalam’s activities to build people’s capacity to respond to disasters through its Disaster Preparedness Coordination training programme, which recognises participants from local mukims and villages who can assist in disaster management activities.

Permanent Secretary (Security, Welfare and Law) at the Ministry of Home Affairs Mohd Amir Hairil bin Haji Mahmud, Acting Director of the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) Shahrin bin Haji Mohd Jawie, as well as officers from the Ministry of Home Affairs and NDMC were also part of the delegation.
