Azlan Othman

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has been allocated a budget of BND123,159,670 for the fiscal year 2023-2024.

Minister of Foreign Affairs II Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd Yusof said BND44,327,430 is for salaries, while BND68,492,160 is for recurring expenses.

The minister said BND10,340,080 is for development expenses.

The minister said the budget allocation will enable the ministry to implement its tasks in upholding nation’s foreign policy and facilitate diplomatic links with other countries, as well as regional and international organisations.

“The world is still facing uncertainty even as COVID-19 begins to recede and disappear from memory.

“However, we are still facing the end of COVID-19 epidemic, and that the political and security situation still shows no sign of abating. This worrying situation can impact regional economic stability and international peace.

“It includes tensions involving superpowers that affect sovereignty and territorial integrity principles and challenges the international rule based system. The tension between Ukraine and Russia have negative consequences to regional economy, leading to the rise of prices of goods and energy.

“As a small developing nation, Brunei Darussalam continues to adhere to the principles of mutual respect and not interfere in other nation’s affairs to uphold sovereignty and integrity,” said the minister, adding that the country will continue to work closely with other nations in the regional and international arena to support a system based on regulations for mutual benefits.

“We have established diplomatic ties with 172 countries. Hence the ministry will continue to instil friendly ties with strategic partners to ensure the interest of the nation is upheld and respected.”
