The much-anticipated Merdeka Trophy 2021 Golf Championship organised by the Mukim Gadong ‘A’ Consultative Council with cooperation from the Brunei-Muara District Office is set to tee off on April 2.
“The tournament is one of the programmes being held in conjunction with Brunei Darussalam’s 37th National Day celebration. The three-day tournament will be held at the RBA Golf Club from April 2-4,” said Head of Secretariat of Merdeka Trophy 2021 Yassin bin Apong during a briefing at the RBA Golf Club in Berakas yesterday.
The qualifying rounds will be played on the first two days of the competition to determine the top 12 gross players. During the final round on Sunday morning, the 12 finalists will play for the title.
The overall nett title will be up for grabs, as well as Divisions ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’. Other categories that will be contested include overall senior gross and nett, and women’s open.
The tournament will be contested based on a System 36 strokeplay format and is open to all amateur golfers in Brunei Darussalam.
Golfers also stand a chance to win novelty prizes including nearest-to-the-pin for all par-3 holes, nearest-to-the-line, longest drive and hole-in-one. Prizes will be prepared on a daily basis during the duration of the championship.
The organiser revealed that the main prize for the hole-in-one is a car, with hole-in-one winners for certain holes set to be BND5,000 richer.
With the tournament set to be played across five sessions, each session – especially during the two sessions each on Friday and Saturday – is expected to have a maximum of 72 players.
Meanwhile, a poster presentation was also witnessed, with Mohd Shahrin bin Haji Mohd Salleh receiving it on behalf of the RBA Golf Club Management, from Yassin.
The tournament aims to foster unity between mukim and village residents and enliven the National Day celebrations through the sport of golf. Mukim Gadong ‘A’ Consultative Council members and senior officers from the Brunei-Muara District Office were also present.
