Mental health cases on the rise

    Syazwani Hj Rosli

The increasing number of mental health cases among children and adolescents is one of the many challenges the country faces, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin said.

He made these comments at the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking held at The Mall, Gadong yesterday.

“The ministry is also paying attention to bullying among children which leads them to drug abuse and to keep company with friends who are irresponsible,” he said.

Although admittedly the trend is alarming, he said by nurturing love and affection among family members, a close connection can be established among children.

“I believe this is the most effective prevention against any factor leading to drug abuse,” the minister said.

Touching on the event’s theme ‘Listen First’, the minister highlighted that listening, understanding and prioritising children’s needs are an important factor in raising them. He said this path will create a happy family and community.
