MD AZIM completed a 3-1 victory over Md Airwan bin Zakaria to cap off a dramatic finish in the second round of the Pro X National Snooker Championship 2019 at the Billiards and Snooker Hall II of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium last night.
The cueist rallied from three points in the last frame of the Group ‘A’ clash before catching a good break when a coloured ball dropped after bouncing off a cushion. He gestured apologetically towards his opponent in what turned out to be a pivotal moment to his comeback.
By the time he cleared the pink ball, Md Azim had a good view on the black ball which had been well positioned for a shot perhaps construed as a minimal level of difficulty.
Md Airwan had few chances to recover from a one-frame deficit but he needed to make the long shot to put the game beyond his opponent’s reach. The jaws of the pocket denied him a chance to contest the deciding frame.
Those near misses enabled Md Azim a route back into contention and the comeback nearly came full circle when he planted the blue ball, before a pink and black sequence ensured a 52-52 draw, a rare occurrence in snooker.
The coin toss ended up with Md Airwan taking the ball in hand before Md Azim planted the black ball into the corner for the victory and a place in the next round against Md Alias bin Haji Rashid on Friday.
Md Airwan took the first frame with a 56 having caught up with his opponent before Md Azim signed out with a 62 having converted a lead to a frame completion.
Md Azim made a break of 22 after successful potting with the coloured balls on his way to taking the frame with a 54-29 score before the drama that unfolded in the last frame.
