Maritime agency hosts virtual prayers to mark anniversary, World Maritime Day

A virtual religious event was hosted by the Maritime and Port Authority of Brunei Darussalam (MPABD) to mark the fourth anniversary of the agency’s establishment yesterday.

The event also observed World Maritime Day which takes place tomorrow.

The event began with the recitation of Surah Yassiin, Tahlil followed by a Doa Kesyukuran led by Muhd Sharifuddin bin Haji Murah.

MPABD was established in 2017 to carry out licensing and regulatory functions concerning merchant shipping, particularly, the safety at sea, manning of vessels and prevention of pollution at sea within ports areas and territorial waters of the country as well as licensing and regulating marine and port services and facilities.

MPABD also acts internationally as the national body representative of the country to regional and international organisations such as ASEAN and the International Maritime Organization (IMO), since the Sultanate became a member of the organisations.

This year’s World Maritime Day, themed ‘Seafarers: At the Core of Shipping’s Future’, seeks to increase the visibility of seafarers by drawing attention to the role they play.
