A 30-year-old man who pleaded guilty to a charge of dishonestly keeping a stolen vehicle was sentenced to 18 months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
Mohammad Rusyduddin bin Ramli first denied the charge but later admitted to it.
Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid found that the defendant has many previous theft convictions with the most recent in June 2020.
DPP Sabrina binti Haji Mahmud revealed that the defendant bumped into a friend who was in a Toyota Kijang on December 9, 2020 in the vicinity of a bank in Serusop.
The friend asked if the defendant was still interested in buying the Toyota Kijang and replied in the affirmative. The friend offered it for BND600 and told the defendant to take the car with him.
The defendant agreed to the deal despite knowing it to have been stolen. He then offered the car to another friend in Ban 3, Kampong Kilanas.
He stayed at the house until December 11, 2020.
The car owner realised the vehicle had gone missing from the parking spot at Zainuddin Complex in Kampong Anggerek Desa at 9.30am on December 9, 2020 and lodged a police report.
Police investigations, aided by a public tip-off, led to its recovery and the defendant’s arrest.
The court also ordered for the return of the car to the owner.
