    Man jailed 10 months for stealing tyres

    A LOCAL man was sentenced to 10 months’ jail for theft by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

    Haji Mohammad Amirnuddin bin Haji Abdul Momin, 47, pleaded guilty to stealing tyres from a tyre shop in Kampong Salambigar, Jalan Muara.

    On the afternoon of February 24, a worker at the tyre shop was attending to a customer when he saw a vehicle being driven around the building. Shortly after, a barber working next to the tyre shop saw the same vehicle being parked in front of his shop.

    The barber noticed one of the two men in the car taking two tyres, hurriedly placing them in the rear passenger seat. The barber immediately informed a tyre shop staff about the the incident.

    The tyre shop worker gave chase, but the men escaped. The worker informed his employer that two tyres were missing from the shop.

    The employer instructed the worker to lodge a police report.

    Deputy Public Prosecutor Sabrina binti Haji Mahmud’s facts of the case stated that police investigations led to the arrest of the defendant. Police recoverd the stolen tyres, worth BND90.

    In passing sentence, Magistrate Hajah Ervy Suftriana binti Haji Abdul Rahman viewed that theft is a serious offence and a custodial sentence is necessary to deter the defendant and others from committing such an offence.
