A local man was fined BND8,000 recently for showing contempt to words regarded sacred in Islam, under Section 220 (C) of the Syariah Penal Code Order, 2013.

The Syar’ie Prosecution Division under the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) took action against Muhammad Za’imuddin bin Mohd, 33, after pictures of his tattoo containing sacred words in Islam went viral.

The Syariah Subordinate Court ordered him to settle the fine by April 15, 2021, or face 12 months’ imprisonment.

Muhd Za’imuddin was ordered to attend three months of religious classes at the Islamic Da’wah Centre, starting January. The court advised him to make an effort to remove the tattoo.

During the sentencing, the Syariah Subordinate Court reminded that the Syariah Criminal Penal Code Order, 2013 was enacted to curb religious offences in accordance with the principles of Maqasid Syariah.

The court also took into account the offender’s disregard for religious sensitivity by using sacred words as a tattoo.
