Malaysia’s first-ever Parliament open day draws in the crowds

ANN/THE STAR – The first-ever Malaysian Parliament open day pulled in a large crowd, with visitors making their way inside the Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara, admiring what it represents.

Many came as early as 8am to take part in what they described as “a great opportunity” to see the august Halls in person, instead of just watching it on television.

The open day is aimed at bringing the people closer and to expose them to the role, importance and history of Parliament.

Dewan Negara president Tan Sri Dr Rais Yatim said that the presence of the public reflects that the role of lawmakers is well-received.

He said the programme offered a great opportunity to the public to learn about the roles of the representatives in both the Halls.

“Various activities such as cultural performances, traditional sports demonstrations and competitions and heritage cooking demonstrations have been organised.”

Yesterday, Rais officiated at the Parliament Open Day and launched a book, Parliament of Malaysia: Pillar of the Nation’s Democracy.

Homemaker Rohani Mohamad, 59, from Datuk Keramat, said she was excited to visit the Parliament for the second time.

She came with Rukun Tetangga members from her area, who did not want to miss the opportunity.

“Usually, you see the MPs battling it out in the Dewan Rakyat so it was surreal to actually be inside.

“Most people are unfamiliar with the process of what happens in the Dewan Rakyat, so it was good to learn how things are done,” she said.

Ahvieniesh Sivagandhi, 21, from Sungai Buloh, was among the 42 students from Universiti Tun Abdul Razak, who were there.

“I learnt a lot today because there were staff members explaining the functions of the Halls and the responsibilities of MPs as well as the role of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” he said.
