Malaysian fined BND609,600 for smuggling cigarettes

THE Magistrate’s Court yesterday ordered a Malaysian man to settle a BND609,600 fine for possession of 890 cartons of smuggled cigarettes.

The defendant, Bidin bin Kahar, 48, will have to serve three years’ jail in default of payment.

The Customs prosecutor informed Senior Magistrate Azrimah Abdul Rahman that a team of Customs preventive officers conducted a joint operation with the Halal Control Food Division, Department of Syariah Affairs at Kampong Lumapas on March 4.

Officers stopped a vehicle driven by the defendant at 8.17pm on Jalan Industri DARe.

The vehicle stopped and the defendant suddenly ran out of it and attempted to flee.

Officers managed to apprehend him and found the large stash of cigarettes in the vehicle.
