Mohammad Dzulfakar bin Haji Mohd Hassan, 49, has been selling nasi lemak by the roadside along Jalan Pasir Berakas since July.
“Sales are steady,” he said when talking about his income. “It depends on how your customers like your product.”
Dzulfakar turned to serving the local favourite rice dish after having trouble finding work. He said employers are sceptical of hiring him as he has a history of heart issues.
His application for welfare assistance has also been denied, he added.
So instead, with the help of two of his nephews, he started a nasi lemak stall. One of the ‘boys’, as he calls them, is a permanent hire while the other is a student helping out over the school holidays.
This month, he has also begun selling nasi lemak by the roadside in Kampong Menglait, served with a choice of chicken or beef.
He said he hopes to try his hand at lamb nasi lemak soon. – Fadley Faisal
