A blend of tradition and culture was proudly showcased during the Pesta Makan Tahun 2024 held at the Siandang Beach, Kampong Jerudong yesterday.
The three-day festival is a collaborative effort between the Kampong Jerudong ‘B’ Village Consultative Council (MPK), MPK Jerudong ‘A’ Consultative Council and Jerudong Kedayan Heritage Association (WARISAN), with the support of the Brunei-Muara District Office.
Various demonstrations were featured such as the preparation of kelupis, a popular local delicacy as well as a traditional gasing (spinning top) performance, a traditional sport famously played in communities which dates back for centuries.
The significance of the Makan Tahun tradition is an age-old custom celebrated after the rice harvest. It symbolises gratitude for a bountiful harvest and seeks blessings for future harvests.
The festival aims to strengthen the bond between the three participating communities and to preserve the cultural heritage of the Kedayan people.
It also seeks to introduce the Makan Tahun tradition to a wider audience and ensure its relevance in modern times.
Deputy Permanent Secretary (Law, International and Research) at the Ministry of Home Affairs Haji Ahmad Nizam bin Dato Paduka Haji Ismail attended the event. The event was also held in conjunction with Brunei December Festival 2024. – Fadhil Yunus
