A Filipina domestic helper was sentenced to six months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday after she pleaded guilty to stealing from her employers.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Hajah Siti Mui’zzah binti Haji Sabli informed Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid that Vina Rose Madriaga Ragaas, 27, had been working at the Lumut household for six months.
The defendant was cleaning the house at noon on September 3, when she took some clothes from her employers’ bedroom, along with several children’s clothing and toys.
She hid the items in her bedroom, together with a camera and a charger stolen from the storage room. At 6.30pm on September 5, the defendant was cleaning the study room when she came across BND140 in a pencil case and pocketed it.
At 11am on September 6, the defendant was cleaning the kitchen when she came across her employer’s mobile phone.
She took the phone and found the cover to hold a Public Gold card and foreign banknotes.
The defendant hid the phone under a dish rack and the card under a table, before stashing the cash in her room.
Later, while cleaning the living room at noon, she looked into her employer’s wallet and found BND25 and RM10, which she also took.
Her employers soon found some of their missing items stowed away in bags, boxes and plastic bags. When they confronted her, the items were returned to them a little at a time.
She also surrendered many other household items which she had taken.
A police report was lodged, which led to the defendant’s arrest.
The defendant said that she had intended to bring all of those things with her, upon repatriation.
