The much-anticipated Low San Basketball Tournament made a return in the domestic scene after a three-year long absence, amid much fanfare at the Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) Court in Batu Bersurat last night.

The opening ceremony commenced with the playing of the national team followed by a welcoming address by BBA Deputy President Lim Boon Teck.

The deputy president shared how the association first forged a partnership with Proprietor of Low San Hardware Store Ong Tiong Oh in establishing the Low San Basketball Tournament, centred towards promoting youth development.

The event continued with opening remarks by Ong Tiong Oh.

The proprietor said, “It has been three years. We could not hold the Low San Basketball Tournament as no mass gatherings and activities were allowed for the public during the height of the pandemic.”

He also expressed gratitude to His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s Government, particularly the Ministry of Health, for its swift action in bringing the pandemic under control and subsequently guiding the country into the new normal. With 56 games to be played, he called players to showcase sportsmanship and exemplify the spirit of the tournament – which is to foster friendship and bring harmony to the community.

In the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship, player Darren Yap delivered the reading of the oath.

The event continued with a mock cheque presentation totalling BND8,000 from Ong Tiong Oh representing Low San Hardware Store to BBA President Goh Kiat Hing, as well as sponsorship in the form of basketball from BBA to Chung Hwa Middle School.

Meanwhile, Yi’s Nation x Propel enjoyed a winning start in the competition following a 96-69 win over Gong Cha.
