AN UNEMPLOYED local woman was sentenced to one year’s jail after she pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court to a charge of theft yesterday.
According to Deputy Public Prosecutor Syazwani binti Jumat’s facts of the case, the defendant, 32-year-old Haslina binti Mohd Sufri, visited a tailor shop at Bangunan Kedai Bumiputra in Seria on the morning of June 29 and requested a candy from the tailor.
She saw a mobile phone on the table and, noticing that the tailor was not looking, snatched the phone and hid it.
The defendant left the shop and was chased by the tailor shortly after.
The tailor caught up with the defendant and asked for his phone back.
The defendant told the tailor that the phone was not with her, and showed him that the phone was not on her anywhere.
The tailor, annoyed, subsequently lodged a police report.
Police arrested the defendant and conducted a body search on her but initially could not find the phone.
After a further search however, the defendant was discovered to have hid the phone in her underpants.
Senior Magistrate Hajah Azrimah binti Haji Abdul Rahman presided over the case.
