Eleven Mukim Amo and Mukim Batu Apoi, Temburong District residents completed the Basic Local Host Tourist Guide Course and received certificates during a ceremony at Setia Pahlawan Hall of the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT).

Permanent Secretary at the MPRT Hajah Tutiaty binti Haji Abdul Wahab, who is also the co-lead of Manpower Industry Steering Committee – Working Group (MISC-WG) for Hospitality and Tourism, presented the certificates.

The 10-day course was organised by the Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) from March 15-18 for Mukim Amo and Mukim Batu Apoi residents.

The course was implemented with the cooperation of MISC-WG for Hospitality and Tourism and Tourism Development Department. It was open to tour guides from Mukim Amo and Mukim Batu Apoi.

The course aimed to improve local tour guides’ skill in providing quality services that fulfil the requirements of the set standards.

It is also hoped to coordinate and channel information by tour guides accurately while providing job opportunities for locals, especially among the youth.

Director and CEO of IBTE Dr Haji Mohd Zamri bin Haji Sabli said, “The tourism industry in the Sultanate has shown an increase in contribution to gross domestic product (GDP). However, the number of tour guides in Brunei is still low.”

The tour guide profession, he said, “is very much needed in the country’s tourism sector, especially taking into account that the sector is expected to recover shortly post-pandemic.”

Course participants were exposed to basic practical and theoretical skills and techniques on procedures as a tour guide, introduction to major tourist destinations and places of interest as well as an introduction to the tourism industry in the Sultanate. The participants also had to undergo a first aid course.

The initiative will expand to other districts and the department plans to hold discussions with village consultative councils and district offices to identify the list of local places of interest.
