FIVE youth representing Brunei left for Singapore yesterday to participate in the Asian Youth Theatre Festival 2018. The event will be held at The Republic Cultural Centre in Singapore.

The three-day event features youth theatre groups from across Asia, 19 original performances and 15 workshops. The 10 Asian countries participating at the event are Bangladesh, Brunei, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and host Singapore.

Speaking to the Bulletin prior to departure, Senior Coach Haji Asmal Hedayat bin Haji Abdul Samad said, “The group is representing Brunei under the Seeds Brunei Volunteer Drama Society. The group will perform cultural performances as well as workshop.

“At the event, we will hold workshop and exchange ideas with the participants from Asian countries,” he said, adding that the event is “like making the Asian theatre committee together.”

He said the participants are fortunate to have be invited (for the first time) this year. “I hope to gain enough knowledge to share with the local community in Brunei. I also hope to bring back the experience to Brunei,” said Mohamad Syazli bin Abu Bakar, another coach.

The festival concept is driven by the desire to share ideas, methodology and pedagogical approaches with youth around the region as well as to enlighten, challenge and empower them with the ultimate aim of progressing the theatrical and artistic landscape within the region.
