Local talents shine in chess competition

TWO young Bruneians made history at the KKCITY Junior Chess International in Kota Kinabalu held from February 3-4.

Abdul Zahirul Haq bin Zazali, 13, won first place while Kamarul Ariffin bin Haji Kipli, 15, took 3rd place at the event. Abdul Zahirul Haq is a Year 8 student from Katok Secondary School while Kamarul Ariffin is a Year 10 student from Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam Secondary School.

Abdul Zahirul Haq was undefeated and obtained 8.5 out of 9 points.

Abdul Zahirul said, “I’m happy with the result and I’m the first one to win the challenge trophy. I thank the Brunei Chess Federation (BCF) for sponsoring us.”

Accompanying the two players was BCF Chess Coach, FIDE Master Muhd Aliuddin bin Haji Azahari. Muhd Aliuddin said, “The event provided exposure for our young chess players especially in building up international experience.
