A 38-YEAR-OLD local man was sentenced to 12 months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday after he pleaded guilty to theft.
Mohammad Alipah bin Lamat had been due to stand trial, of which the hearing date was about to be fixed.
The defendant, however, had a change of mind and admitted to the crime yesterday.
Chief Magistrate Pengiran Masni binti Pengiran Haji Bahar took into account the defendant’s list of previous convictions on sentencing.
DPP Hajah ‘Adzimah Mukarramah binti Haji Salleh’s facts of the case stated that the defendant entered a clothing store on the ground floor of The Mall, Gadong at 12.41pm on December 9, 2018 and saw a stack of boxes at the store.
He grabbed one of the boxes and managed to leave the shopping complex undetected.
The box contained 17 men’s gym tank tops.
After noticing that the box had gone missing, one of the store’s shop attendants checked CCTV footage from the store’s surveillance camera and saw the defendant stealing the box.
A police report was lodged, leading to the defendant’s arrest.
