A local man was sentenced to 24 months in prison by the Syariah High Court yesterday for the offence of sariqah or theft under Section 55(3)(b) of the Syariah Penal Code 2013. The punishment amounts to the extent of ta’zir.
During the incident on February 29, Waliuddin bin Hassan, 34, was found to have stolen motor lubricant oil from a shop in Sengkurong by hiding it underneath his clothes.
His actions were caught on CCTV and were witnessed by the shop attendant.
While sentencing, the court took into consideration that the defendant has six previous theft convictions and ordered for the defendant to serve his prison sentence from the date he was arrested on February 29. The defendant was ordered to return the stolen item.
Investigations were carried out by Sengkurong Police Station personnel while the prosecution was represented by the Syar’ie Prosecutor from the Syariah Prosecution Division, Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA).
