A LOCAL man was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment for charges of theft he had pleaded guilty to earlier in the Magistrate’s Court.
On sentencing Mohammad Faizul bin Ibrahim yesterday, Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid said that the defendant had time to reflect after the first offence he committed, but decided to commit yet another offence, and this calls for a deterrent sentence.
However, his instant guilty plea and being a first time offender were also taken into account by the court.
DPP Nur Eleana binti Dato Paduka Haji Hairol Arni’s charges against the 22-year-old defendant stated that he stole a car battery and a fuel container from a house at Jalan Pantai in Kampong Sengkarai, Tutong at 6.57pm on January 20, 2019 and a car battery from a lorry parked behind Hua Ho Petani Mall at Kampong Petani between December 21 – 22.
It was the incident at the house that unearthed the defendant’s felonies.
A CCTV camera installed at the back of the house had caught the defendant in action.
The house occupant realising his missing belongings, checked the CCTV footage and reported it to the police on seeing the defendant’s act.
The defendant’s arrest followed by police investigations led to finding the theft of the car battery from the lorry, as it was also reported by the lorry driver.
