A 42-year-old local who evaded authorities, and possessed smuggled cigarettes and liquor was ordered to settle a BND127,500 fine by the Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
Senior Magistrate Hajah Ervy Sufitriana binti Haji Abdul Rahman ordered Jasman bin Aman to serve 22 months’ jail in default of payment after he pleaded guilty to failing to follow orders from a public officer and possessing 135 cartons of a variety of cigarette brands, and 21 cans of various types of beer.
The Customs prosecutor informed court that Customs preventive officers eventually detained the defendant in his car at Kampong Labu Estate, Temburong District after he evaded a roadblock following a car chase.
The officers unearthed the contraband in his car at 6.05am on September 6, 2020. The court ordered the cigarettes and beer destroyed.
