    Local company hands over BND15,000 tithe money

    Local company Al-Bukhari Textile Centre Sdn Bhd yesterday handed over business tithe amounting to BND15,000 to the Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB).

    Minister of Religious Affairs cum MUIB President Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman received the sum from company manager Fakhri Alam.

    Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs Pengiran Dato Seri Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar, Acting Secretary of the MUIB Haji Abdul Aziz bin Haji Akop and personnel from Syarikat Al-Bukhari Textile Centre Sdn Bhd and MUIB also attended.

    MUIB, the highest Islamic religious body in the country, has jurisdiction in the management and operation of zakat collection, based on legal provisions as stipulated in the Islamic Religious Council and Kadi Courts Act Chapter 77, Amendment 1984, namely through sections 114 to 121 and also the Zakat and Fitrah Regulations 1969.

    Business tithe must be paid by Muslim traders, including those who have non-Muslims partners, when they meet all the mandatory conditions of business tithe, namely: Islam, independent, sufficient nisab (minimum amount for a Muslim net worth to be obligated to give tithe), sufficient haul (completion period for a tithe asset) and business intention.

    The types of business include groceries, goods, import, export, services, restaurants, hospitality, manufacturing and construction.

    The tithe collected by the MUIB, including collection of business tithe from January 2020 until today, amounts to BND25,339,904.50.

    Meanwhile, the tithe distributed to recipients nationwide (throughout 2020 to present day) stands at BND43,743,378.29.

    Tithe money is distributed to recipients comprising the poor and destitute, Muslim converts, Al-Gharimin, Amil (tithe collectors) and Ibnu Sabil.
