Local athletes feted for achievements at ASEAN Schools Games

Local athletes, who participated in the 13th ASEAN Schools Games (ASG) 2024 in Da Nang, Vietnam, were feted for their achievements during a ceremony at a hotel yesterday.

Minister of Education Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh, the guest of honour, presented certificates of appreciation and Incentives for Sports Excellence (IKS) awards to recipients, who participated at the 13th ASG 2024 under the banner of the contingent of Brunei Darussalam Schools Sports Council (MS SSBD).

All contingent members, including student-athletes, sports managers, coaches and officers, achieved commendable accomplishments throughout the ASG in Da Nang.

Four notable achievements were national swimmer Hayley Wong from Pengiran Anak Puteri Hajah Masna Secondary School who smashed the national record in the 50-metre (m) freestyle with the time of 27.94 seconds. Hayley was also the holder of the previous national record of 28.07 seconds while Abdullah Abbas bin Awang Abdullah from Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam Secondary School broke the national 3,000m record in athletic after he finished seventh place with a time of 9.41.92 seconds. The previous national record was 9.48.21 seconds since 2007.

Meanwhile, Nursyakirah Mawaddah binti Mohammad Fauzi from Sports School, who competed in the ASG for the first time, attained a bronze medal in the Tunggal Puteri event.

First timer Md Azinuddin bin Md Azreee, also from Sports School, brought home a silver medal in the Male Tanding ‘C’ class. – James Kon
