Local archers take a shot at world tournament

Three local archers left for Las Vegas yesterday to participate in The Vegas Shoot, the world’s largest and most prestigious indoor archery tournament, which will take place from February 7-9 at the Southpoint Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The archers, Awangku Muhd Afwi bin Pengiran Haji Bakar and Md Nasrullah bin Nassaruddin will compete in the Recurve Championship Male category while Md Shah Rezza bin Nassaruddin will compete in the Compound Flight category.

Awangku Muhd Afwi said they are expecting some 4,000 participants from all over the world including Olympic medallists Brady Ellison and Chang Hye-Jin.

“It is not the first time for us to compete overseas, but this is the first time at this level and the world stage.

“It is going to be challenging for us but we will relish the competition and hopefully bring something out of this such as experience, knowledge and friendship.

“We hope to build links with archers from around the world and get the network going on,” he said.

On preparation, Awangku Muhd Afwi shared that they practised regularly over the past few months, a couple of hours per day and having more sessions over the weekend.

Md Shah Rezza shared his excitement as it is the biggest tournament he will

participate in his archery career over the last two years. It has been his dream to take part in it.

“I’ve prepared myself mentally and physically for this tournament and I hope that the other archers and I will show our best performance during the competition,” he said.

The Vegas Shoot will bring together some 4,000 archers from around the globe ranging from beginner archers to Olympic champions.

Senior, youth, compound, or recurve; The Vegas Shoot welcomes all demographics and shooting styles. The three-day competition features the traditional 3-spot 20-yard Vegas Round that made the tournament famous.
